Every ensemble and performance space is unique. A 17-piece jazz orchestra, a high school concert band, a chamber ensemble, and a singer-songwriter all require different approaches to recording. 

Daring Sound begins by understanding your performance, your venue, and what you want the finished recording to accomplish. From there, we design a recording approach around the music- not the other way around.

1. Consultation & Planning

Before the recording begins, we talk through your performance and goals. 

We'll discuss the ensemble, repertoire, venue, performance schedule, and what you hope to do with the finished recording. Whether you're creating an archival recording, sharing a concert with your community, releasing an album, or preserving an important performance, these goals help determine the best approach.

We'll also discuss the practical details of your project, including number of performers, venue access, recording time, desired deliverables, and any editing, mixing, or mastering requirements.

How far in advance should you book?

As early as possible – particularly for school concerts, festivals, and other performances with fixed dates. Early planning gives us more time to coordinate with your venue, determine microphone placement, and make sure the recording setup fits naturally into your performance.

2. Thoughtful Microphone Selection & Setup

Every recording begins with choosing the right microphones and placement for the performance. 

Daring Sound maintains a carefully selected collection of microphones suited to everything from intimate acoustic performances to large ensembles. Depending on the project, we may use a combination of microphones, stereo techniques, and room microphones to capture both detail and the natural character of the performance.

The number of microphones depends on the ensemble and the desired result. A small chamber ensemble may only require a few microphones, while a large orchestra or jazz ensemble may require considerably more.

Whenever possible, the recording system is designed to remain unobtrusive so musicians can concentrate on performing.

3. Professional Live Recording

Once everything is in place, it's time to perform. 

Daring Sound records performances with professional multitrack equipment, allowing individual instruments and sections to be captured independently when appropriate. This provides flexibility during editing and mixing while preserving the character and energy of the original performance.

For concerts, the recording can often take place alongside your normal performance without requiring musicians to change how they perform. 

Can you record at our school, church, venue, or other performance space?

Yes, Daring Sound is equipped for mobile recording and can bring a professional recording system to your performance location. The venue's acoustics, available space, electrical power, audience configuration, and performance schedule are all considered during the planning process.

4. Mixing & Refinement

After the performance, the recording is carefully reviewed and edited.

Depending on your project, this may include selecting the best takes, making necessary edits, cleaning up unwanted noise, and preparing the individual tracks for mixing.

Mixing is where the individual elements are brought together into a cohesive musical presentation. Levels, dynamics, stereo placement, tone, and ambience are all carefully shaped to support the performance without compromising its character.

The goal is not to change the identity of your performance, but to enhance what is already there. The goal is to faithfully capture what made the performance worth recording in the first place.

5. Mastering & Delivery

Once the mix is complete, the final recording can be mastered for its intended use.

Mastering provides the final opportunity to ensure that the finished recording translates well across listening systems and is properly prepared for its final destination – whether that's digital distribution, streaming, physical media, archival use, or personal listening.

What will I receive?

Your final deliverables depend on the needs of your project. These may include a finished stereo recording, individual tracks, edited multitracks, or masters prepared for digital distribution.
We'll establish your desired deliverables during the planning process so that there are no surprises at delivery and that the final product meets your expectations.
